All with the varying
John Murphy is an abrasive dick. Calling him otherwise is a bald-faced lie. But that's not all he is. He's also a surprisingly caring young man -- he'd just rather shoot you before showing it. Or in his case, shoot you and thenshow it. After all, he did shoot Raven in the back and then stick by her side. But then he showed his slightly softer, more vulnerable side -- admitting that he was sticking by her because that when his time came, he himself didn't want to die alone.
Solving problems with swift violence is a favorite thing of his, but only because he's an act first and think later kind of guy. If he ever actually stopped to think -- which he occasionally does -- he'd realize that sometimes, just sometimes, violence? Not exactly the way to get you happy solutions to your problems. And just because he's a good bit on the violent side doesn't mean he always approves of a violent answer to something. When Finn massacred the 18 Trigedakru, Murphy protests repeatedly. (Of course, he just gets blamed for it, but hey.)
He eventually tires of feeling as though he doesn't fit in -- who wouldn't? -- and goes off with Jaha on his quest for the City of Light. He again displays his lighter, more caring, and yet a little tougher version of it side when they meet Emorie, telling her that her mutated hand looks badass. It shows that he doesn't so much care about how a person looks, caring more about what's inside... just in the extra special John Murphy sort of way. He could have insulted her, and anybody else who knew him would have expected him to, but he didn't. He can defy expectations quite nicely when he wants to, he just rarely sees the point in it.
And even he has his limits. When Jaha sacrifices someone to save himself, Murphy pretty much just goes "fuck you, dude, leave me here". He would rather be on his own than with a murderer. He has morals, after all, they're just... weird ones.
Good with a gun. Knows how to fight -- but won't always best you.
